Stripe reportedly buys AI gateway OpenRouter for over $7B

Bloomberg reports Stripe has finalized a deal for OpenRouter at more than $7 billion, roughly five times the startup's May valuation.

Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, according to a Bloomberg report relayed by TechCrunch. The Wall Street Journal reported the two companies were in talks last month. A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch it does not comment on rumors or speculation, and neither company has confirmed the deal.

OpenRouter sells a single API endpoint that routes requests across many model providers, letting developers pick a model per task based on capability and cost. The company says it serves 8 million users and offers access to more than 400 models. In May it raised a $113 million Series B at a reported $1.3 billion valuation, with investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG. CEO Alex Atallah has described the company as "Stripe for AI" — one access point, no lock-in.

For anyone building on OpenRouter, the practical questions are about what happens to that positioning. A neutral routing layer is valuable precisely because it is not aligned with any one model vendor or payments stack; ownership by Stripe puts inference metering and billing under the same roof, which could be convenient or could narrow the roadmap depending on how it's run. Nothing in the reporting addresses pricing, API stability, or whether OpenRouter continues to operate independently.

The price is also worth noting on its own: roughly a 5x step up from a valuation set three months earlier, at least as those figures are reported. Details beyond the headline number are limited, and the deal remains unconfirmed by either party.
